New Art Materials of Note

Article originally written for the Palette newsletter of Art Association Napa Valley

I like to visit art stores when I travel.  I always see something new or materials that I haven’t noticed before.  This time I visited Island Blue in Sidney near Victoria on Vancouver Island and Opus Art Center on Granville Island in Vancouver.

Canson Plein Air Art Boards

These sturdy art boards sold in blocks of 10 are ideal for the plein air painter. The Canson Plein Air Watercolor Artboard is 129 pound cold press watercolor paper laminated to rigid acid free 2-ply boards.  Pads of papers suitable for illustration, acrylic and oil mediums are also available.  I’d seen this sold individually before, but not as a block of 10 like this.

Strathmore Learning Series Instructional Artpads

These spiral pads are notebooks with a new twist: Strathmore has partnered with established artists to produce instructional drawing or painting pads with 10 to 12 step-by-step lessons accompanied by online templates and video tutorials.  There are many titles to choose from including

  • Learn To Draw Animals
  • Learn To Draw Nature in Colored Pencil
  • Learn to Paint Watercolor Basics
  • Learn to Paint Watercolor Flowers

You can even buy an all inclusive kit that includes the notepad, paints and brushes.
